Deaf In the Family

Don't you just love those moments of "how did I not know that existed" illumination? That's how I felt the first time I listened to this brand new promo CD for Deaf in the Family titled For Those About to Rock, an unreal collaboration from Brookyn production team The Resource (DJ Sae One and Adam Podrat aka Mr. Ling) and a host of underground MCs including Scavone, Bavu Blakes, Pumpkinhead and more. Their 10-song promo CD features remixes of classic rock tracks -- from The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" to The Who's "Who Are You", flipped with total professionalism. There is no way they cleared these tracks and I imagine this is just an APB put out in advance of the proper Deaf in the Family record to be released later this year. I posted a really intelligent reworking of Neil Young's "Southern Man" that utilizes its familiar and totally remix-ready angular guitar/drums break. Like the Joe Beats Experiment the quality of the production easily distances this stuff from the crowded remix/mash-up section at your local vinyl emporium. These are gifted studio guys who are ready to bring it. Obviously eclectic and open-minded, try and get your hands on this entire disc if you can. It's that good. Tortoise: Unreleased Mike Watt Remix

After an absolutely astonishing 5-day bachelor party in 2 cities, it's time to take a serious relax and mellow out. Pete, Dave and Dan hit big on the Preakness which launched 18-plus hours of a flawless party. Words currently fail me. So, I come home Sunday welcomed by a stack of packages, each filled with some killer promo stuff, the most exciting of the lot a 9-song sampler from the upcoming Tortoise box set A Lazarus Taxon. I linked to the track listing below; basically every conceivable b-side, import and rarity they have ever recorded. Having been out in LA and Vegas, surrounded by all things foriegn and inauthentic, I was in dire need of the familiar, of something calming and nostalgic. Something real. Well, this unreleased version of Tortoise's classic "Corprone Brunch" as remixed by Mike Watt -- former boomstick operator extraordinaire for The Minutemen, fIREHOSE and his many assorted solo endeavors -- is just that. It's the panacea after a panic attack, the chicken soup following an extended cold. He takes Doug McCombs already soothing low-end and adds his signature melodic flourishes. Mike Watt and Tortoise are the reasons I picked up a bass in college and together it's exactly what I needed after an extended series of exploding neurons. Old school heads will appreciate this on so many levels. It's perhaps the most personally exciting post I've uploaded since the inception of SK way back in the day. Reminder (aka Josh Abrams)

Been a while since the last post. My apologies but big happenings on the horizon for SK, trying to move to a new blogging client (maybe moveable type, maybe something else) so I can change the template up. Summer project. In the meantime, a lot of new records have come via the postman and I have a string of posts coming up with some stellar tunes. Today's post is from Josh Abrams, longtime Chicago/Thrill Jockey bassist who started in Philly working the low-end for The Roots and has moved on to work with Sam Prekop, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Town and Country and Prefuse 73 live since. His new solo project is under the Reminder moniker and is some lo-fi bedroom beats type stuff. As a whole, I can't say I was instantly enamored by Continuum his new LP, but it has grown on me the way some recent Ninja stuff like Loka, Lotek Hi-Fi and Fink has. In my humble opinion, "On Rooftops" is one of the most endearing tracks on the record, a mellow, nearly psychedlic easy listener that hints of Sea & Cake circa the 50s as remixed by Scott Heren. There's a nostalgic feel to Abrams' construction, something lacking the angularity of many other Eastern Development releases. As if he spent a rainy day staring out of the window while making this track. Even the random rimshots sound like raindrops on aluminum siding. Enjoy this one.
