John Roberts

In a musical world where each new artist uses a more bizarre nom de plume than the last, it’s refreshing to come across an electronic artist with the unassuming and very plain-sounding name of John Roberts. It’s a name that sounds more akin to, say, a conservative chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, than an explorer of deep sounds.

Find a picture of the almost Google-proof Roberts and you’ll see that despite his restrained style of dress and haircut, John Roberts’ face gives him the appearance of a satyr. And like a satyr disguised as a man, his music sounds a bit plain at first. Not boring, but not super-adventurous. But like a satyr, he will wait for you to become comfortable with the environment and then lead you to a whole new world of wonder. Minimalist track beginnings become sparkling nighttime journeys through sound. Pixies peer from the dark phosphene corners of closets. The sonic journey is never shocking but always fascinating.

Glass Eights is John Roberts’ new album. It will be released on CD on October 11.
