Pop Winds

Pop Winds is a group with a distinct, unmistakable flavor. Not surprisingly, distinct unmistakable flavors have a tendency to appeal to a narrow range of people. Thankfully, this Montreal-based trio has done us all the favor of breaking from the norm—at least in this respect. Pop Winds has a sound that, however distinct, should be not only accessible, but also very tasty to almost anyone who likes music.

Pop Winds uses the tried and true sort-of-rock-mostly-electronic pop formula, which under most circumstances would bore me out of my mind. That said, almost everything that I’ve heard from this group is truly intriguing and refreshing. The majority of the songs layer well-crafted, anything-but-thoughtless electronic pop melody and harmony over an expansively deep soundscape. The ambiance ends up being something like what you would get if Noah Lennox were a mainstream 80′s singer playing a set in an underground cavern. Actually it’s not really like that. But you can find out for yourself because the debut album and earlier EP are both available to buy on CD or download for free.

P.S. try to listen on speakers or headphones that can really handle bass texture and quality.

P.P.S. the saxophone is an artful and pleasantly unexpected touch.
