Beat Beep Butterbumps
I was going to post a pretty far-ranging summer mix earlier this week, but something was missing. It was a little too wide open. Then I realized there’s a common theme in the new music that’s buzzing around in the airwaves this summer. Between Best Coast, Budos Band, the Books, Blundetto, and Big Boi, this is shaping up to be the summer of the B.
I already had quite a few “B” initialed artists on the playlist, but all the older jams that filled in the cracks were not representing. So I scratched it all out and started over. Now the left edge of the playlist is a beautiful line of B’s, like a freshly mowed strip of unkempt lawn.
So what do we have? New tracks from some of the aforementioned, plus Bibi Tanga, Balkan Beat Box, Bilal, and Bei Bei. Relatively recent jams from Binario, Boozoo Bajou, Burial, Banda Unaio Black, Barbatuques, Bertrand Burgalat. Baby Elephant. Classic soulful jams from “B” labels Blue Note (Bobby Hutcherson) and BBE (Bahamadia). And of course the original kings of summer, the Beach Boys. Relax and enjoy.
Bibi Tenga – Red Wine
Baby Elephant – Turn My Teeth Up!
Balkan Beat Box – Lijepa Mare
Blundetto – Cuban Shirt
Bahamadia – One-4-Teen (Funky for You) f/ Slum Village (prod. J Dilla)
Banda Unaio Black – Escorpiao
Barbatuques – Barbappapa’s Groove
Beach Boys – Let’s Go Away For Awhile
Beverly Road All-Stars – Danger in Your Eyes
Budos Band – Nature’s Wrath
Binario – Balinha
Bei Bei & Shawn Lee – East
Books, The – I Didn’t Know That
Bertrand Bergalat – Mal de Bright
Burial & Four Tet – Moth
Boozoo Bajou – Yoruba Road
Bobby Hutcherson – Little Angel
Bilal – Free

Oh Walker. Nevermind the super perfect title of this mix, that’s just the very tip of your genius. You know how sometimes you see someone doing the “work” they do, and you feel a slight pang of something – maybe reverance, possibly envious? – It is obvious that the person has a gift, and uses it in the best possible way… That’s how I feel about you, listening to this mix ( Ah! The Mixtape! Of which I am a LOOONG time lover and critic!)which will hopefully be followed by many more… Thanks Walker. xo N
