Tortoise: Unreleased Mike Watt Remix
After an absolutely astonishing 5-day bachelor party in 2 cities, it's time to take a serious relax and mellow out. Pete, Dave and Dan hit big on the Preakness which launched 18-plus hours of a flawless party. Words currently fail me. So, I come home Sunday welcomed by a stack of packages, each filled with some killer promo stuff, the most exciting of the lot a 9-song sampler from the upcoming Tortoise box set A Lazarus Taxon. I linked to the track listing below; basically every conceivable b-side, import and rarity they have ever recorded. Having been out in LA and Vegas, surrounded by all things foriegn and inauthentic, I was in dire need of the familiar, of something calming and nostalgic. Something real. Well, this unreleased version of Tortoise's classic "Corprone Brunch" as remixed by Mike Watt -- former boomstick operator extraordinaire for The Minutemen, fIREHOSE and his many assorted solo endeavors -- is just that. It's the panacea after a panic attack, the chicken soup following an extended cold. He takes Doug McCombs already soothing low-end and adds his signature melodic flourishes. Mike Watt and Tortoise are the reasons I picked up a bass in college and together it's exactly what I needed after an extended series of exploding neurons. Old school heads will appreciate this on so many levels. It's perhaps the most personally exciting post I've uploaded since the inception of SK way back in the day.
