Reminder (aka Josh Abrams)
Been a while since the last post. My apologies but big happenings on the horizon for SK, trying to move to a new blogging client (maybe moveable type, maybe something else) so I can change the template up. Summer project. In the meantime, a lot of new records have come via the postman and I have a string of posts coming up with some stellar tunes. Today's post is from Josh Abrams, longtime Chicago/Thrill Jockey bassist who started in Philly working the low-end for The Roots and has moved on to work with Sam Prekop, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Town and Country and Prefuse 73 live since. His new solo project is under the Reminder moniker and is some lo-fi bedroom beats type stuff. As a whole, I can't say I was instantly enamored by Continuum his new LP, but it has grown on me the way some recent Ninja stuff like Loka, Lotek Hi-Fi and Fink has. In my humble opinion, "On Rooftops" is one of the most endearing tracks on the record, a mellow, nearly psychedlic easy listener that hints of Sea & Cake circa the 50s as remixed by Scott Heren. There's a nostalgic feel to Abrams' construction, something lacking the angularity of many other Eastern Development releases. As if he spent a rainy day staring out of the window while making this track. Even the random rimshots sound like raindrops on aluminum siding. Enjoy this one. RIYL: Sam Prekop, Nightmares on Wax, Bonobo, Prefuse 73, Sea & Cake Resources
